Mayor of Gary, IN Predicts Upset

Sorry for the short dairy, but thought some folks might want to see this.  I figured a comment post would get lost among the frothing multiple diaries currently popping.

So, while we wait for the final tally from Indiana.  Come on Lake County!

According to this article, the Mayor of Gary, Indiana is hinting that Obama may upset Clinton when all is said and done.

Some snippets after the fold.

As the fate of a nailbiter Indiana primary -- and possibly the course of the Democratic race -- hung on his city, Gary Mayor Rudy Clay said just now that it might take a while yet to finish counting the vote in Lake County, which includes Gary, and said that his city had turned out so overwhelmingly for Barack Obama that it might just be enough to close the gap with Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Might be a shocker...

Clay said the results were late coming in from Lake County because of the large numbers of absentee ballots that had to be counted -- about 11,000. Under local practice, all of the cartridges from voting machines in Gary and nearby East Chicago are first collected at the local airport before being driven to the county headquarters to be tallied with the results from the rest of the county, he said. He said there were no major technical problems holding up the count.

Clay himself was deeply involved in get out the vote efforts this afternoon, going door to door to drum up anyone who hadn't yet voted, he said. A volunteer in the Obama office in Gary said that canvassers who went out today found that in some neighborhoods almost everyone reported having already cast an absentee ballot.

"It was one of the biggest get out the vote campaigns I've seen," Clay said. "It was the biggest get out the vote campaign ever in Gary for a a presidential election."

Time will tell.  Come on Lake County!

Clinton wins it. Obama supporters manage to engender hard feelings with gloating and stupid behavior unbefitting their candidate. The media is strecthing every bit of psychic energy out of us all, making billions of dollars and preventing students from writing final papers and studying.
John McCain is a liar. Erratic, poor judgment.

Its a small county (2.00 / 1)

Only 7,000 people. Poblano's projection has Clinton gaining a few hundred votes there. Larger counties such as Porter that haven't finished reporting will come in a lot harder for her.

Re: Mayor of Gary, IN Predicts Upset (2.00 / 2)

Hey - I'm a big Obama supporter and... man... I'm really nervous about this. The last thing I need to hear is some big pol near Chicago guaranteeing a win before the votes are tabulated.

I just don't like it. Especially since this was a big problem back in the day and that holding votes reeks.

I just don't like it. So I can see where people who are deeply invested with Senator Clinton are nervous and worried.

I'm worried. Last thing we need is people to associate cheating with our man.

I agree with you. And I have to say, as a Clinton supporter, I can't help feeling slightly suspicious. But even if cheating is going on, I don't know that I'd actually be willing to blame Obama for it -- his supporters maybe, but I don't think Obama would want anything to do with that. I'd need some pretty serious evidence, I think. Still, I don't like this at all.

Yeah... I mean... this is just not what the Democratic Party needs right now.

I've just read so much about this area in political history and it's never good when they start withholding votes.

And it's so not cool for a mayor to be interfering on this level, even if he's for Senator Obama. Just not cool.

It's bombastic; it's suspicious.

He should not have held those votes.

Yeah - I am pretty suspicious of what is happening in that county given it's history - I don't think Obama's campaign would do anything unsavory, but I think there are people in that county who would.

Re: Mayor of Gary, IN Predicts Upset (2.00 / 1)

I agree with that, but I think most reasonable people will realize Obama himself had nothing to do with it. In all honesty, Obama's winning on his own. He wouldn't cheat like this.

But if he wins IN because of this, there are going to be some wild conspiracy theories. I'll probably be inclined to believe a few of them, and that's not like me. This is extremely unpleasant.

It's... it's just not fucking cool.

Re: Mayor of Gary, IN Predicts Upset (none / 0)

However legitimate the count might be, this looks suspicious.  There's no reason to withhold all the votes.

Be that as it may, a huge night for Obama either way.  Hillary is in debt, and is very unlikely to be able to raise enough money to even pay her debts, let alone continue to compete.

Re: Mayor of Gary, IN Predicts Upset (2.00 / 1)

If I were a corrupt mayor, actively engaged in vote fraud, I wouldn't be saying a word in public--much less trumpeting publicly about a possible upset.  This mayor seems to be thrilled that his hard work of getting out the vote for a candidate he supports may result in a big, unexpected victory.  I don't know a thing about the guy, and I'd humbly suggest that we save our aspersions for Bushco and their soulless ilk.

Regardless (2.00 / 1)

I'm an Obama supporter, but I damn well hope there's a recount, because I DO NOT want any hard feelings over this.

If Obama wins fair and square, awesome.  If not, Obama needs to be on top of that shit, because you know he didn't order something like this.

I just calculated that Obama needs ~75% of the remaining votes to win Indiana - it is possible in Lake County due to it's high black population.

Re: Mayor of Gary, IN Predicts Upset (2.00 / 1)

I've been playing with some math and possible projections, and it seems pretty unlikely that he will catch up. However, I do think it's very possible that he pulls within a point, which would be awesome. Much depends on how many votes will come from Lake County--and more specifically, the city of Gary.

I'm still hanging on for the results, though, hoping for a miracle. Damn hope gets me every time.
